IIT-Madras had a requirement of converting two existing 100 seating classrooms into live recording class rooms. The main challenge here is the issues of Room modes due to parallel wall surfaces. The Room modes are the main cause of distortion of sound waves. Hence, we designed the ceiling and side wall profiles to sort out the issues of room modes. In addition to non parallel wall surfaces, we designed few acoustic diffusers to spread the sound energy evenly. The control rooms are located next to rear wall hence the glass vision panel is designed and positioned in such a way that it reflects the sound to the floor and floor is further treated with carpet which in turn absorbs the reflected sound from the glass vision panel. The Class room is designed for noise level of NC 15 and Reverberation time of lesser than 5 seconds. Being a class room the other fictional aspects such as lighting, Air-conditioning and sight lines was taken care of without compromising the acoustical quality.
